TASK 3: Development & Design

Sketches & Work Progress

In Task 1 ,I selected an artwork for all the task. Here is my chosen artwork :

Title: BAIZE - Exorcising the Scourge of Evil

Artist:Kuri Huang

years :2023

Size:1411×1411

Source: Kuri Huang

  • Sketches

Fig 1.0 sketches

#Sketch 1:I want the large curves and rotating lines in the background of the picture to form a sense of vortex around the figure, so that all the visual lines of movement return to the figure's face, forming a kind of ‘visual vortex’.

#Sketch 2:I wanted to create scenes with a sense of sanctity, ritual or destiny to reinforce the theme of the character as the ‘Chosen One’.

#Sketch 3:I  wanting to reflect the visual hierarchy of the higher characters and the lower beings, reinforcing the sense of status of the divine descender/ritualist.

Of the three drafts I have, I think the Task 2 draft is perfect for a scene that is sacred, ritualistic, or fatalistic.

 WORK PROGRESS

  • Selected sketches 2

Fig 1.2 final sketch

I started to differentiate between black, white and grey. Let the visual centre of the subject and the sense of space show.

  • Optimize sketches to line drawings

Fig1.3 Refinement of the line drawings

I used procrate's outlining pen to draw a refined draft and a better sense of space by using Fig 1.2 final sketch's drawing ideas

  • base color differentiation

Fig 1.4 Buddha's base color

Fig1.5 background color of characters

Then I first use linear reduction, so that the draft of the sense of line is weaker, can be better integrated into the picture, the use of gray, respectively, on the two objects on each color, can be easy to the back of the two objects to draw separately

  • Color Team

Fig 1.6 color team

I wanted the overall color to be cool-toned, so I chose to follow more blue colors, yellow is mainly used to attract the eye, so that people pay attention to the main center.

  • Background painting

Fig1.7 Background painting
I applied nico scrolling from procrate and used colors from my color team to lay down the colors and wanted to make the Buddha statue blend into Beijing as well

  • Character Refinement
First I used gradient color mapping to make the character's theme color the same shade as the background, and then I started with the body refinement

Fig1.8 Character Refinement

During the refinement process, I realized that the European sunburst pattern didn't seem to fit the picture, so I went to the sunburst pattern in the Dunhuang frescoes in China.

Fig 2.0 Chinese sunburst pattern

secondly, I added many irregular patterns to increase the richness of the image and increased the saturation and contrast of the image, darkening the surrounding area in order to emphasize the center .

I refer to the illustrated patterns of the chosen kui artist, which in her creative drawings represent the arrival of calamity or bad luck, which in my case also represents this good and evil

Fig 2.2 Increased saturation + pattern

I ended up using yellow and using line expressions to center around and highlight the center

lotus flower

My lotus flower  utilizes the same Baize painting as the one chosen.
  • The figure is in the center of the image
Both paintings use a central composition, with the main character in the middle of the image, acting as the visual focal point, and the surrounding elements surrounding the figure.
  • Circular elements surround the figure

Both pictures have a circular halo or circle decorating the head or back of the protagonist, which enhances the sacredness of the figure and also serves as the central frame of the composition, making the picture more holistic.
  • Sense of Symmetry

Despite the complexity of both backgrounds, both show an almost symmetrical composition, with decorative elements and lines on either side of the protagonist echoing each other to make the image more balanced.

Flowing Lines Surrounding the Subject .There are a large number of curved elements surrounding the figure, such as floating ribbons, light, and energy flow, etc., which enhance the sense of dynamism and make the picture more vivid.

Richly layered background with prominent figures .Both images use a richly layered background, with complex decorations and abstract elements in the background setting off the protagonist, while strong contrasts of light and shadow are used to make the protagonist more prominent.
Strong sense of depth

FEEDBACK

Week 6

General feedback: There's a lot of cleanup from the starting draft to here, the creative process, but the current progress display may not be clear enough.

Specific feedback: Choose your color teams and modify the creative flow of your work.

WEEK 7

General feedback: overall are good, but can add some fog in the surrounding.

Specific feedback: can add some fog in the surrounding, more can reflect the picture of the sense of holiness
