PROJECT 3: ANIMATIC & STORYBOARD DEVELOPMENT

  • Objective: The objective of this project is to produce a 1-3 minute animatics storyboard based on your approved short animation.
  • Requirements: The animatic storyboard production must be based on the proposed story ideas developed for Project 1.
  • Deliverables:
  • Prepare thumbnail drawing (10%)
  • Sketch your story ideas on A4 paper (can be digital sketch)
  • You are free to use any kind of format as long as the story can be understood in an orderly manner.
  • Feel free to use text to add description.
  • Present in the class for brainstorming purposes.
  • Output all drawings as one pdf file.
  • Prepare storyboard (10%)
  • Format: A4 size with landscape orientation
  • Contents:
  • Panel no
  • Pages no
  • Description
  • - action
  • - audio (monologue, dialogue, sound effects)
  • - effects (fire, explosion etc)
  • Duration
  • You can download from any storyboard template.
  • Use an arrow to guide the action and camera work.
  • Use black and white colour tone to show some depth in the composition
  • You can plan the drawing as a layer such as background, prop, character etc. to make it animatable for animatics.
  • Output all pages as one pdf file.

For this task, I drew the storyboard based on the task design of the previous task. First, I drew each of the storyboard frames I needed.

I first drew a thumbnail to roughly locate the task scenario, which will facilitate my subsequent work.

Then, each storyboard is arranged in story order and combined to form a storyboard.

After reviewing my first draft of the storyboard, the teacher felt that some parts needed revision. The first scene needed to be tilted slightly, like Santa Claus moving. The eighth scene needed an additional shot showing him frantically searching for the Cloud Goddess. The ninth and tenth scenes used too much visual overlap; some adjustments were needed. The ninth scene could be drawn with the Postman small and the Cloud Goddess large. The eleventh scene should be a medium shot, with the Cloud Goddess as the main focus. Scenes 15-16 needed to explain the scene after the little girl enters her dream. Scene 19 should show the Postman standing by the little girl's bed, with an additional scene of him reaching for the black envelope. Scene 22 should show the girl waking up, drawing and coloring a monster, then the camera pans to her holding up the drawing and laughing. The story segments could be described using a narrative style.

I have revised my storyboard.

final  storyboard:

I used video editing techniques to edit the animatic. To make each transition more varied, I exported individual items and characters as separate images, adjusted their positions, and added effects such as slow movement and gradual appearance. To better depict the little girl's dream, I also used picture-in-picture and clipping masks to represent the dream.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 13:

Overall Feedback: The teacher felt my storyboard needed improvement.

Specific Feedback: The first scene needs to be tilted slightly, with the character moving like Santa Claus. The eighth scene needs an additional shot showing him frantically searching for the Cloud Goddess. The ninth and tenth scenes use too much visual clash; some adjustments are needed. The ninth scene could be drawn with the Postman small and the Cloud Goddess large. The eleventh scene should be a medium shot, with the Cloud Goddess as the main focus. Shots 15-16 need to explain the scene after the little girl enters her dream. The 19th scene should show the Postman standing beside the little girl's bed, with an added scene of him reaching for the black envelope. The 22nd scene should show the girl waking up, drawing and coloring a monster, then the camera pans to her holding up the drawing and laughing. The story segments can be described using a narrative style.
