INSTRUCTION

Project 1A - Character Design for Animation
  1. 1A - Character Design (Week 7)

  2. Deliverables:

    1. A turnaround sheet / Model sheet (front, side, back and ¾ view perspective)

    2. Pose sheet (Various poses in different action) - 5 poses *full body

    3. Character facial expressions  - 5 expressions (Happy, Sad, Angry, Fear, Surprice). The drawing just needs to focus on the face, not necessarily to show the entire body.

The character I chose is the protagonist of "Luo Xiaohei's Legend", Luo Xiaohei

 1.Model sheet
First, I drew the three views of Luo Xiaohei's character.

I used red lines to position the head, hands, legs and soles of the feet of the characters, so that the characters in each angle of the three views are the same.

2. Character Poses Sheet

First, I drew the general movement of the character, and then carefully outlined the details of the character.

After checking that there are no mistakes in the character's shape, I will color the characters one by one.
When I finished drawing the character poses sheet, I found that the picture was a bit empty, so I added the kitten of Luo Xiaohei's prototype next to it.

3. Character Expression Sheet
I first drew the general direction and effect of each character's expression, then used a liner pen to draw the line draft, and then colored the characters one by one.

Although this exercise only requires drawing the movements of the character's head, I think it is too monotonous, so I drew the character's waist.

PROJECT 1B: LAYOUT DESIGN

  1. For this work progression 2, you will be creating layout designs for an animated project using perspective. Your designs will be used as backgrounds for various scenes in the animation. Your goal is to create visually interesting and dynamic layouts that enhance the story and the mood of the animation.

  2. Choose a scene from the animation and create a rough sketch of the layout design using perspective. The sketch should show the placement of the background elements and characters in the scene. You can use traditional methods such as pencil and paper or digital tools such as a tablet and software.

  3. Refine the sketch into a more detailed line drawing. Add in the textures, shading, and other details that will bring the scene to life. Use the principles of perspective to create depth and dimension in the design.

  4. Create a colour study of the layout design. Choose a colour scheme that complements the mood and the theme of the scene. Experiment with different lighting scenarios and colour variations to create a visually compelling design.

  5. Export the final layout design as a high-resolution image (1280 x 720 with png format file) that can be easily integrated into the animation software (Adobe Animate).

First, I created the perspective relationship, and then made a draft of the layout design. The scene I chose was a high-speed rail scene that is common in animation.

Then I colored the scene. Since I wanted to show a high-speed rail scene before sunset, the overall tone was mainly warm. So I used an airbrush pen to spray a layer of light orange on the seats to avoid making the overall picture look abrupt.

Since I wanted to show the feeling of sunset, I added a halo to the picture and also added shadows to make the objects in the picture more three-dimensional.
