Project 1Auditory lmaging——Sonic Design

INSTRUCTION

Project 1: Auditory Imaging

We were assigned a task to create an audio image using any combination of the following. The audio should create an image for a first person perspective that is able to visualize what is happening based solely on the audio track. It should be able to tell a story for the chosen scene. We are not allowed to use any voice or dialogue. We are not allowed to create our own sounds.

The options include:

1. Wildlife + Background

2. Everyday Life + Background

3. City + Traffic + Outside Ambience

4. Industrial and Electronic Sounds + Background

5. Weather + Background

6. Market + Village Ambience + Background

The duration is 2 minutes. Be careful with the rhythm when doing the sound design.

Storyline:

'Walking through the rainforest at dawn'

Sound Effects List:

Scene 1: The silence before dawn

  • Atmosphere
  • The breeze blows through the trees
  • The sound of dew drops
  • The first chirping of insects in the distance

Scene 2: Deep in the forest

  • Footsteps on dead leaves
  • Sound of brushing against bushes
  • A single bird flies quickly by
  • The buzzing of insects approaches

Scene 3: Startle the flock of birds

  • The branches of the bushes are moved
  • The flock of birds is startled and flies away
  • The sound of monkeys
  • The breeze in the forest becomes stronger

Scene 4: The roar of the beast

  • The roar of the beast in the distance in the deep forest
  • The birds and insects all disappear
  • The vines are pulled aside
  • The sound of footsteps
  • Heartbeat
  • Quickened breathing

Scene 5: Escape from the forest

  • The sound of running footsteps
  • The last roar of the beast in the distance
  • Breathing changes from rapid to slow
  • The sound of insects in the distance slowly recovers
  • The sound of tree trunks clapping

Scene 6: The rain forest returns to silence

  • The chirping of birds
  • The sound of flowing water in the stream
  • Frogs jump into the water
  • Leaves fall and touch the ground

Process Progress

First, I downloaded all the needed sound effects from Freesound and BBC I created a new folder to store all the sound effects. Then, I imported into Adobe Audition and arranged the clips according to the storyline.

Fig1.0 Audio Arrangement

I used the method of using "harmony" in Adobe Audition that the teacher taught us in class to adjust some audio.

Auditory Imaging:

I made some changes based on the teacher's feedback.

FEEDBACK :

WEEK 7:

The teacher gave me some suggestions for modifying my project 2. In the part where the lion roared, the sound was too close and did not highlight the sound in the distance, so I had to modify the sound before the lion roared.

REFLECTION

When I was conceiving the story, I initially only focused on the direction of the plot, such as "the protagonist walked into the old forest" and "suddenly heard the sound of branches breaking". But when designing the sound effects, I found that the "emotional tension" of each plot needs to be supported by sound: for example, when writing "the tranquility of the old forest", you can't just record "silence", but superimpose the vague bird calls in the distance (the low frequency is slightly weaker, simulating distance), the "rustling sound" of stepping on fallen leaves (high frequency highlights the sense of friction), and even add very slight "wind passing through leaves" low-frequency vibrations - these sounds give "silence" layers, and the audience can "see" the density of the forest through sound. And at the moment of "branch breaking", I used "the crisp sound of dry corn stalks breaking" (main sound) + "the sound of fiber friction of cardboard" (details), and then enhanced the low frequency of about 200Hz through EQ, so that the sound has a bit of "sudden heaviness", which is matched with the description of "the protagonist's heartbeat accelerating" in the story, which strengthens the sense of tension.
